Our first awareness event held at St Finbarr's Sports and Social Club was a great success. We tested 80 men and helped to raise the awareness of the risks of prostate cancer among the Coventry community. Thanks to all who worked so hard to ensure the smooth running of this testing session. Our next event at St Finbarr's will be on Saturday 2nd December from 10:45am to 1:00pm. More details to follow.
Julie Hunt, the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager at the George Eliot Hospital, gave us an interesting and informal talk about the HOPE course. The course is designed to help you rediscover your strengths and overcome the emotional and practical challenges of life after cancer. You are able to share your experiences and find support from other people going through the same experience. You don't have to face it alone. Julie encouraged a lively discussion and the more we explored the issues the more we could see the relevance of such a course.
This meeting of the UHCW Prostate Cancer Support Group, held in the Faith Centre at the Walsgrave Hospital, was well attended with 18 men and their wives/partners. The meeting was all about the advice services available to cancer patients. Macmillan generously funds the Coventry Citizens Advice to deliver advice using dedicated case workers. The service was described in outline by Balwant from Coventry CAB, and this was follwed up by Karen who is one of the dedicated case workers. The service mainly deals with welfare and housing advice, but will guide and introduce clients to other support services .....
Unfortunately, due to last minute commitments, last minute, Julie Hunt, from the George Eliot Hospital had to cancel talking to us about HOPE! Instead we had an informal and lively discussion on topics arising from the recent Tackle AGM and Conference entitled "Trials and Tribulations". Thanks to all participants who made it such and enjoyable and interesting evening! Meanwhile, we will invite Julie Hunt to a future meeting.
Annual Conference and AGM - 2017
“Trials and Tribulations” (sponsored by Prostate Cancer UK). This was a very positive, lively, and informative event. Click here for a summary of the sessions. A full report of the conference will be published in the August 2017 edition of Prostate Matters.
This meeting, held in the Faith Centre at the Walsgrave Hospital, was well attended with 26 men and their wives/partners. Helen Ure spoke to us about The Hummingbird Centre which she set up initially in Rugby and now in Coventry. The centre provides facilities and events for the benefit of people affected by cancer. It is a place where such people can meet informally or in groups. It offers counselling, alternative therapies, and courses - as well as acting as a drop-in centre. After Helen's talk, we split into four groups and discussed why men might be reluctant to visit their GP, and how these inhibitions might be overcome.
Today was the first of our drop-in sessions at the Hummmingbird Centre in Coventry. It was quiet! If you are concerned or affected in any way by prostate cancer you are more than welcome to call in at the Hummmingbird Centre on a Thursday afternoon between 2 and 4 pm. The atmosphere is informal and relaxed and no appointment is necessary. The Centre is on the 5th Floor, Coventry Point, Coventry, CV1 1EA. Coventry Point is the tower block in Orchard Way. There is a lift to the 5 th floor. Directions
