Coventry & North Warwickshire PCSG - Open Meeting
Thursday, 20th February 2025
Thursday 20th February 2025 – We were delighted to welcome Mr Donald MacDonald to this meeting. Donald is a patron of the Group and spoke to us about recent advances in Urology and prostate cancer treatment. In particular he described the innovative new scanning equipment as “an absolute game changer”. See https://bbc.in/4gdlvrP for more detail. This relies on prostate cancer sensitive PSMA PET scans to analyse tissue samples during radical prostatectomies. UHCW has the facility to store radioactive material on site - in this case 68Ge to generate the radioactive isotope 68Ga crucial to PSMA PET scanning.
In response to questions Donald covered a range of topics including the diagnostic use of MRI scans. He also referred to the increasing use of Active Surveillance as a treatment option for men with a Gleason 3+3 score.
Donald confirmed that UHCW will particapte in the TRANSFORM Trial due to start 2Q25. This has the potential for the introduction of focal treatment(s) at UHCW. Donald and his team are working closely with other research hospitals.
Our next Prostate Health Awareness event will be held on Saturday 12th April at the Mary Forryan Centre, leicester Road, Hinckley, LE10 1LW. As usual we continue to use the Graham Fulford online booking system. As a result our events run smoothly with minimal queuing and adequate social distancing. See Coming Events for more detail.
